Microsoft patent lends weight to Xbox 720 set-top box rumors

January 13, 2012 1 comment

The rumors of next gen Xbox consoles from Microsoft are floating around all over the place over the last few months. Back in November, we heard that there would be two new Xbox consoles launch with one aimed at the gamer and the other packing in some set-top box tech for the gamer that wants to watch TV too. A new patent has surfaced that lends weight to the version with the set-top box capability.

Microsoft eyeing Xbox LIVE gaming on iOS and Android

January 12, 2012 1 comment

Microsoft is looking to extend Xbox LIVE to iOS and potentially Android and other platforms, according to a new job listing at the company, extending the company’s gaming reach beyond its current Windows Phone focus. The posting, spotted by  LiveSide , calls for a software development engineer to ”define, design and implement Xbox LIVE mobile experiences on Windows Phone, iOS and other platforms” with the potential for location-based gaming, social networking-enabled titles and more.

Xbox Live Avatar tattoos now available

January 9, 2012 0 comments

Firearms may have been too suggestive a topic for the Xbox Live Marketplace to broach, but apparently body modification is an A-OK, family friendly activity for everyone to enjoy. Xbox Live customers now have the opportunity to trade real money for virtual tattoos on fake people via the Marketplace. Available designs encompass the whole of “regrettable,” from hot-rod flames and meaningless “tribal” scribbles to idealistic kanji symbols for “peace” and “love.” We should point out that the tattoos aren’t actually accessories, but rather t-shirts and tank tops with transparent design “sleeves” that replace your existing clothing, meaning that it’s impossible to have a tattoo with anything other than a blank shirt. Tattoos are also arm specific, just like in real life, so make sure you’re really committed to the placement of your “Mom” heart before dropping the Microsoft points. [Thanks, Randy.]

This Rose Parade Kinect float won’t respond to voice commands

January 7, 2012 0 comments

College football enthusiasts first laid eyes on Microsoft’s Kinect float prior to kickoff at this year’s Rose Bowl game today, but how else can those without an affinity for football sneak a glimpse? Microsoft’s Facebook page , apparently. The above video was posted today, a time lapse of the massive structure being built over the course of a week. A second video embedded past the break shows the finished float going through a few maneuverability tests — sorry, we can confirm there’s no Deathmobile hiding underneath.

Halo: Eye of the Storm is anything but calm

January 5, 2012 0 comments

You know, the younger crowd has more ways than ever to pay homage to their favorite games. Back in our day, the only “machinima” we could produce were crude sketches of Chrono and the Battletoads in our Trapper Keeper. Now kids can produce short films about their favorite game using their favorite game! And that’s pretty much what Halo: Eye of the Storm is . Created under Microsoft’s Game Content Usage Rules in Halo 3 , this 22 minute epic re-imagines the events of The Storm, the game’s fifth campaign mission. In his submission email to Joystiq, creator Philip Kang told us it took over two years to create Eye of the Storm . He had to play through the same mission over 100 times trying to get the AI to do specific things necessary for each shot. Actors, right ? In the end, it was all worth it: Kang’s created a video masterpiece, now featured on a website our friend’s uncle once called “a website.”

Modern Warfare 3′s dedicated PC servers are unranked, unlocks controlled by admin

October 25, 2011 0 comments

Modern Warfare 3 ‘s dedicated PC servers will be unranked and admins will have complete control over what’s unlocked, Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling said in a PC FAQ . Public PC servers will be ranked and feature a standard unlock system, while consoles will strictly use P2P, with no option for dedicated servers, ranked, unranked or with randomly assigned unicorn mounts. That’s right — no unicorns . Bowling defended the decision on his Twitter, saying the admin control of dedicated PC servers will be “Nothing like COD4. That’s why we built in all the new backend control / security, so we don’t have that problem again.” Bowling also said that no one on PC is forced to play P2P servers; it all depends on what you want to get out of the game: “Public is about progression, private is about control.”

SSX comes shredding in a few weeks late on February 14, 2012

October 23, 2011 0 comments

Despite carving out a January 2012 launch window for itself earlier this year, it seems that SSX won’t be making its way down from the peak (of … uh … development? or something?) until February 14, 2012. EA’s official SSX site unceremoniously unveiled the release date on its front splash page, floating mysteriously above a snowy backdrop. Before the game’s arrival on Valentine’s Day, might we suggest practicing your transitional snowboarding slash wingsuit skills ? You’ll never know when a deadly descent ( or descents , of course) will suddenly appear, ya know?

Xbox 360 hits 57.6 million units shipped, worldwide

October 22, 2011 0 comments

Tucked inside Microsoft’s latest earnings report for fiscal Q1 2012 comes an updated figure on the worldwide Xbox 360 numbers: 57.6 million shipped. The most recent quarter, ended September 30, accounted for 2.3 million units shipped, a 2.8% decrease from the same period last year. Despite that dip in sales, the Xbox 360 has been the top selling console in the US for the last seven consecutive months, and platform revenue was up 7% thanks to increased Xbox Live revenue.

Dragon Age 2 – Mark of the Assassin Review

October 22, 2011 0 comments

A mysterious woman hoping to use you for a heist during a rich guy’s party, her motivations much more complicated than they initially seem… wait a minute. Dragon Age 2: Mark of the Assassin , the second major DLC release for Bioware’s current fantasy RPG series, has a strikingly familiar premise. Similar, even, to Mass Effect 2 ‘s Stolen Memory downloadable add-on, which also featured an enigmatic female thief looking to use Shepard to robin-hood somebody. But that’s where the similarities end. Where Stolen Memory felt like a tight, fast, well-paced attempt to tell a character’s story, Mark of the Assassin is a much more sprawling exercise. Unfortunately, that’s generally to its detriment.
